VIS 2025 in Vienna
Conference ExperienceOur team recently returned from IEEE VIS 2025 in Vienna, Austria, and we’re still buzzing with excitement from the experience. It was a whirlwind of presentations, demos, insightful discussions, and of course, some memorable moments exploring the beautiful city of Vienna. The energy at the conference was incredible, with researchers from around the world gathering to share cutting-edge work in visualization and analytics.
We kicked off our activities with running the tutorial on “Live Collaborative Immersive Analytics Development with DashSpace”. Seeing participants get hands on with the platform, exploring cross reality collaboration in real time, and watching their “aha!” moments as they grasped the architecture that’s what makes all the hard work worthwhile.
During the core programme we presented our VIS paper “Critical Thinking in Data Visualisation: A Framework for Contextual Scenarios”. We engaged with the community, answering questions on how this structured heuristic evaluation method can facilitate reflection and critical thought in visualization design. The feedback was very positive, and we had some fantastic conversations about potential applications.
Our IEEE TVCG paper “DashSpace: A Cross-Reality Toolkit for Immersive Analytics”, related to our tutorial earlier that week, generated lots of buzz. Demonstrating line, on stage, how users can create and manipulate visualizations across 2D and 3D environments really captured people’s imagination.
We also had a strong presence across multiple workshops:
-
EduVis Workshop: Our paper on teaching critical thinking through contextual scenarios sparked great discussions about the future of visualization education.
-
VAHC Workshop: Presenting our empathy-centred visualization framework for person-centred dementia care opened up important conversations about making visualization more human-centered in healthcare contexts.
-
Poster Session: Our poster on using LLMs for explanatory visualization in employment law drew an engaged crowd, with lawyers, visualization researchers, and AI practitioners all weighing in with unique perspectives.
Coming back from VIS 2025 with fresh ideas, new connections, and renewed energy, we’re already thinking about what comes next. The conversations we had, the feedback we received, and the work we saw from other groups have inspired us to push our research even further.
A huge thanks to everyone who stopped by our sessions, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged with our work. And of course, a massive shoutout to the whole HCC team for making this such a successful and memorable conference!
Until next year, VIS!
